The Global Symposium on Armyworm Control was held in Beijing to draw a blueprint for the future of invasive pests in many countries

From October 31 to November 2, the Global Symposium on Sustainable Prevention and Control of Armyworm was held in Beijing. Representatives from government departments, agricultural research institutions, agricultural enterprises and individuals from China, the United States, Italy, Australia, Vietnam, Kenya and other countries and regions attended the symposium. With the theme of "Drawing a Global Blueprint for Tackling invasive pests in the future", the symposium will hold the opening ceremony, conference reports, special reports and results display.

The Conference reached and issued a call for action on sustainable prevention and control of Armyworm and invasive pests, strengthened regional joint monitoring and control technology exchanges as well as policy and financial support, promoted international cooperation on sustainable prevention and control, and strengthened joint efforts to enhance the monitoring and control capacity of armyworm and other invasive diseases and pests, so as to ensure global food security.

Armyworm is a common problem and challenge facing the whole world. After Armyworm invaded China in December 2018, the Chinese government attached great importance to it, fully mobilized and deployed, formulated technical plans for monitoring and prevention and control in a timely manner, and carried out research and development of key technologies for prevention and control and demonstration of technology integration. Through continuous control, the prevention and control has achieved phased victory, not only innovating the prevention and control mechanism, but also building an effective comprehensive prevention and control technology system. To achieve the goal of "seizing food from the insect population" and ensuring a good harvest, the source of insects migrating back to Southeast Asian countries has also been reduced. China has taken an active part in the "Global Action for the Prevention and Control of Armyworm of Grassland" initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. China is ready to work with other parties to consolidate the existing cooperation foundation, constantly innovate cooperation mechanisms, and work with the international community to prevent and control Armyworm of grassland with a more open attitude, so as to play a positive role in the global plant protection cause.

Dr. Robert Bertram, Chairman of the Global Organizing Committee of the Symposium and chief scientist of the United States Agency for International Development, said that the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) has taken a leading position in monitoring and early warning of Armyworm, and the development and application of prevention and control technologies. The successful implementation of the Global Armyworm Control Initiative provides an important reference model for the global response to the future threat of invasive pests and diseases.

Beth Bechdol, Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), pointed out in a video message that through this seminar, all parties will strengthen exchanges, learn and share experience, and promote the realization of Armymoth control from emergency prevention and control mechanisms to sustainable management.

Wu Kongming, a member of the Party Leadership group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that in the future, it is necessary to carry out and deepen international cooperation in the prevention and control of major invasive pests such as Armyworm, and promote the exchange of information on the occurrence of diseases and pests, advanced prevention and control technologies, and experience in prevention and control management. We will strengthen the construction of monitoring and early warning mechanisms for major invasive pests such as Armyworm, analyze the prevalence rules and disaster mechanisms of cross-border migration of pests and diseases, build a technical system for monitoring and prevention of cross-border pests and diseases, and improve scientific prevention and control.
